Application Surveys

This guide covers custom screening questions attached to a job opening's application form.

Purpose

Contact details and a resume don't always tell recruiters what they need to know. This answers: "What else do we need to ask applicants for this particular opening?"

Question Types

A screening question can be one of several types, covering most of what a recruiter would want to ask:

Yes/No, single-choice, multiple-choice, short text, long text (textarea), number, percentage, date, file upload, and rating.

Attaching Questions to an Opening

  • Questions can be written specifically for one job opening, or grouped into a reusable template that's attached to several openings at once — so a standard set of screening questions doesn't need to be rebuilt every time a new opening is created.
  • Any question can be marked mandatory.
  • The order questions appear in can be rearranged by dragging them into place.

The Candidate's Experience

  • If an opening has screening questions attached, a public applicant answers them on a second page, right after submitting their basic details and resume.
  • Their answers — including any files they upload (up to 5 MB each) — are saved against that specific application.
  • This extra step is skipped when a recruiter enters a candidate directly on their behalf, rather than the candidate applying themselves.

How Visibility Is Decided

  1. Permissions. Broad permissions grant the ability to view, create, edit, or delete questions and templates across every opening.
  2. Being the opening's recruitment manager. Grants access to that specific opening's questions, without needing the general permission (see Job Requisitions & Open Jobs).
  3. Company. Questions belong to the company of the opening they're attached to.

Customization Options

  • Choose from ten question types to match what's actually being asked.
  • Mark individual questions mandatory or optional.
  • Build a reusable template once and reuse it across many openings, or write questions specific to a single opening.
  • Reorder questions to control how the form reads to an applicant.

Good to Know

  • A reusable template is the efficient path when several openings need the same standard screening — it's built once and attached wherever it's needed.
  • Openings with no screening questions skip this step entirely — candidates aren't shown an empty extra page.
  • A candidate's basic application (name, resume, contact details) is saved before they're taken to the survey step, so an incomplete or abandoned survey doesn't lose their initial application.
Ask what matters, every time.
